Bergman Island
Film Screening
Directed by Marie Nyrerod
Karen Cooper of Film Forum writes:
"Someone once claimed that the New York Film Critics Circle was founded to give Ingmar Bergman a prize every year. Indeed, Bergman's extraordinary output (more than 50 features since 1946) and his outsized influence, make him one of the leading auteurs of the 20th century. This visit with him, at home on the Swedish island of Faro, elicits his final, brilliant thinking on the masterpieces Persona and Cries and Whispers, and the role played in his life and art by fear, love, death, music, humiliation and, in his own words, 'the intensely erotic nature of film and theater.'"
A discussion with Director Marie Nyrerod and Bruce Sklarew will follow the film.
Bruce Sklarew is Chair of the Forum for the Study of Movies and Mind, Associate Editor of Projections: A Journal for Movies and Mind and Co-editor of Bernardo Bertolucci: Interviews and The Last Emporer: Multiple Takes: A Psychoanalytic Study of Cinema. He has organized the program Bergman's View of Women: Persona, Cries and Whispers, Silence, Autumn Sonata.
The screening is presented courtesy of Marie Nyrerod and in collaboration with Film Forum, New York's leading nonprofit cinema for independent film premieres and repertory programming. This is one of a number of events arranged as a collaboration between Film Forum and the Philoctetes Center. Bergman Island will open theatrically at Film Forum on December 6th.
