The Dream and the Painted Image
Roundtable
Participants: Christine Anzieu-Premmereur, Mary Ann Caws, Hallie Cohen, John Paoletti, Harriet Shorr
Dreams, personal symbols, and the realm of the unconscious were essential creative sources for Surrealist artists, such as Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Dorthea Tanning, Louise Bourgeois, and Helen Lundeberg. Surrealism, USA, on view at the National Academy, explores the unique developments of the movement in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas -- and the relationship between Americans and European artists in exile here from 1930-1950. Tour the exhibition with Rebecca Allen, Curator of Education, then join invited scholars and artists who will discuss the relationship between painting and the rich imagery of dreams. Moderated by Hallie Cohen, Art Department Chair, Marymount Manhattan College.
Christine Anzieu-Premmereur is a child and adult psychoanalyst.
Mary Ann Caws is Distinguished Professor of English, French and Comparative Literature at The Graduate Center, City University.
John Paoletti is Professor of Art History at Wesleyan University.
Harriet Shorr is a painter, a Professor of Art at Purchase College, and a member of the National Academy.
